What is a livery?

Livery can be the term describing the paint scheme of an aircraft. Most airlines have a standard paint scheme for their aircraft fleet, usually prominently displaying the airline logo or name. From time to time special liveries are introduced, for example prior to big events.

Airlines often apply and paint specialized liveries to their standard liveries and logos of their airplanes, examples being:

  • the logo of a sports team
  • images of a city, usually a hub
  • advertising for a company

Military air force generally paint non-combat aircraft in a national livery, while combat aircraft are normally camouflaged. The image above is of a VMFA(AW)-224 decorated in a tigerstripe livery.
